Thanks to everyone who came by first ever booth at the Maine Boats and Harbors Home show this weekend in Rockland! Check out my short video of the Boat Yard Dog World Championships below... I am planning on cleaning up at this event next year with a very well trained border collie who can catch frisbees while riding in an inflatable. The dog can steer the inflatable to very near where the frisbee is landing then he leaps out of the inflatable and catches the frisbee in mid air, then splashes into the water... this will easily win this competition as you can see in my video, the dogs in this year's competition were so incredibly untalented, the winner was chosen by the handler who got dressed up the best and acted funny and fell into the water! Thanks to Jeff Scher for the photo of me at my Booth. Check out his blog post for a great aerial photo of the show.

Setting up a Sunrise Shot in 12 Minutes

I've been hoping to use this new iPad App I had purchased a while back called "The Photographers Ephemeris," available here, that lines up sunrises and moonrises for photographers based on their location. A good example of how technology and art can collide in nice shot. I had crashed in the welcome to maine rest area coming back from newport and woke at 4am. Somehow the idea popped into my head that I could shoot a sunrise somewhere so I fired up my droid X Nav and said "Navigate to Portland Head Light" then also found that sunrise was at 5:12. The Droid told me that I'd be there at approximately 4:58 so everything looked great to try it out. I also had the new iRadar and iPad App to go along for the ride, and it did pick up a few cops on Broadway in South Portland, though I think they were just munching on donuts. I had also picked up the "FOLDIT" Aluminum Foldable cart pictured here at West Marine in Newport which provide a great way to quickly get all my gear from the boat into the position I needed for the sunrise. Using the TPE app for my iPad (you need internet connectivity so I had it tethered with my Rooted Droid) I was able to position the camera well before the sunrise on a Gorillapod SLR which is great for those like me in constant motion and want to travel very light and fast. Once the sun poked up it was just a matter of quickly trying a few exposures and looking in the review screen to make sure I had a decent image... now someone please order a 16 by 20 of this so I can buy more gadgets!

One of my first really decent racing shots with this set up, definitely "takes practice" and I'm finally getting the hang of it after a bunch of failures, at least it you want to try this, you've got a steep learning curve to compete with me...more to come! Some nice wind at the finish of this race up in Halifax, following the fleet in a whaler all the way up there is NOT recommended... just kidding we drove and spent about $400 in gas getting there... please buy some photos when we get the gallery up, or we'll never do that again, or at least until the canadian dollar tanks.

I took this photo in the Fox Island Thoroughfare, on my typical route from Rockport to Northeast Harbor. There are a good number of "summa folk" in this area that have some pretty nice boats; and this is just their daysailer mind you. A beautiful Morris 26 on a picture perfect day. Flip to page 6 of this issue and you'll see that Morris took out a full page ad for this boat. You can snag one of these beauties by winning the lottery, or just save up a quarter million doing the 9-5, which may take slightly longer.

This photo was taken off Owls Head Light near Rockland, Maine. A really up and coming cruising harbor with great marinas and restaurants - rockland based cruisers are ready to head out into Penobscot Bay for a week of chartering. You can land at the airport nearby and be sailing some of the best cruising grounds in the world within a half hour... it's kind of Alta and Salt Lake City, you fly in and hit the ground running...now I just need to save up for that ticket to Salt Lake. You can tell it's December, I am thinking about skiing not sailing!

OYRA Jr Waterhouse Offshore Race

Some nice breakers along the south shore under the golden gate meet the return leg of the OYRA Jr. Waterhouse fleet offshore race, out of Richmond YC. The Big Boat Series ran a course out under the bridge back in 2006. If they did this every year, a lot more photos would be make it out into the press/calendar world, as the back drops up the coast here are simply spectacular, and the waves make for some great photography.

OK, so it's finally time to make a business card, I know all the "start your own business" books say the first thing you do is make up a really nice card, so I'm only 22 years behind... who has time for this kind of stuff, you know, office work? Front is of Soozal wiping out in Miami Race Week 2009. Back is me on the golden gate bridge, great spot for portraits. I tell other photographers that way to make a small fortune in Marine Photography is just to start off with a large one. In my case since that wasn't possible it's been a long slow methodical climb to the apex of the yachting photography world, with many stops at the taco bell drive through, and many a days hoarding regatta food for future grazing...

Devan Wardwell riding a Santa Cruz Nomad on "Syncline" (see route on Everytrail) on the Washington side of Hood River. Some Head Cam Video here of the new trail in Sandy Ridge (see route). Also the shuttle ride called "8-track" (see route)" in post canyon near hood river. The trails here are very fast with banked switchbacks and speeds can get upwards of road bike speeds through the woods, here's some footage of the faster part of the Sandy Ridge trail down (blue trail). Also here's a great cross-downhill mapped route called "skyline"

CARINA Wins the St. David’s Lighthouse Division Trophy at the Newport Bermuda Race 2010

Carina a 48-foot sloop designed by McCurdy & Rhodes, she won on corrected time under the Offshore Racing Rule by the very large margin of 3 hours, 35 minutes over Gregory B. Manning’s Sarah (Warwick, RI). In third place, seven minutes behind Sarah, was Belle Aurore, a Cal 40 owned by R. Douglas Jurrius (Easton, MD).

Delicate Arch with Rainbow

So you are probably thinking I "lucked out" with this shot... but that's not entirely true. Using the new "Rainbow Finder" app on the iphone made this shot fairly straight forward, the way it works is that whenever iphone users see a rainbow they all point at it with there iphones, and it triangulates the location of it based on all the iphones locations, then sends this info to XM's weather radio satellites which then transmit the information to my cessna's satellite weather system... I then wrote some custom software that puts the plane on autopilot to the exact jump location, and when the light goes green I jump out and land right at the spot where I can get this kind of perfect rainbow shot...

Maroon Bells near Aspen Highlands. I was surprised to find this place so untracked, it was a 6 mile uphill XC ski in, but for an outdoor town with like 20 mountain shops, you'd think there'd be at least a few people up here in one of the most photographic spots around? Do people just buy the gear, then buy a photo and say they went there? I think this was worth the 12 mile round trip ski, just made it back at dusk... lucky it was all downhill back...

Caught a UFO flying by the sliver moon!

Stopped on route 550 last night between Ridgeway and Montrose Colorado to shoot this sliver moon, all was eerily quiet then out of nowhere, something went whizzing by when I got back I saw this streak of light going through the picture, all I can conclude is this is certainly a ALIEN spacecraft, Wow I never thought I'd catch one in a million years!

Discovery Launch!

Wow! This launch was amazing since the launch happened 10 minutes after sunset, the plume was illuminated at the apex, this image show the seperation of the main tanks and the amazing cloud. The twist in the cloud is a result of the rotation of the shuttle soon after lift off... witnessing this in person is truly amazing, the power of the rocket engines is simply awesome.

The shot of Katabatic reminds that a guy fell off right about there and JH and I had to haul him onboard the Dauntless and then actually drop him back off on the boat.. here he is in the water!..

I was telling someone today how back in 1993 I got my first calendar published using a $100 Pentax K-1000 that I had used in my photo classes at Bowdoin... now that's starting at the bottom.. here it was in 1993..

I chased this eagle in the photo boat at top speed across Rockport Harbor after seeing him out by the lighthouse, and he landed in the trees across the harbor and I got out the big lenses to capture him taking off again. It's great to Eagles making a comeback on the coast of maine and beautiful to see one this close.

Not a really windy day for shooting yachting anywhere, so after about 10 hours sorting photos in the office, I headed out to Halfway Rock with the ipod, snapped this shot and headed back in the dark...I think the the trip was worth it, I'd never actually been there by boat, though I have some nice aerials of this I wanted the sunset shot.

Ken and I were heading out to Swans Island to pick up the 17' Montauk so he could shoot the Atlantic Regatta over in Blue Hill. This mega yacht comes along with this woman doing a workout on the deck with ipod on and clearly some added hardware... meanwhile a bunch of schooner people are going the other way checking out the whole scene. Now there's some "contrast" for you... hmm... who looks like they are having more fun?

Well I was on a mission to shoot Wendameen at this angle today for an artist... I think I did a pretty good job on that one, then I bombed around and got some other great shots, and really got a nice tangle on the prop and had to get out not only a knife but even pliers to get this all off as it was really jammed up in the crevase between the prop and lower unit, not a pretty site, it took me about 15 minutes, and I was way out there at point #21!

Lightning over Nubble Light in York Maine

I find photography is really a combination of many skills which is fun. This photo came about totally unplanned since I was driving back from Newport and hit a bunch of lightning coming into Maine. I thought to myself where can I quickly drive to (it was already like 11pm) and shoot something with lightning behind. {skill #1 gadget freak skills} I stopped and pulled up the POI memory on the GPS in the 4 Runner and realized Nubble light was only 7 miles away... so I just hit "guide" and away I went. The roads were practically flooded so I tested out the 4 runner's water fjording capability on route {skill #2 offroad driving skills}. When I got there I pulled in and somehow dug out my tripod and set up a shot. The camera was getting soaked so I backed in and flipped up the hatch for some protection {skill #3: creative use of available assets} ... the problem was I only getting the lighthouse clear when people would drive in with their headlights, so finally I got this guy in a mini cooper to shine his lights on the lighthouse for me {skill #4: being able to talk people into helping you out} ... still not a lot of luck but I was getting the time of the exposure I liked on the red light of the lighthouse itself... then I really started to get on track when I found my portable high intensity spotlight and starting "painting" the lighthouse with it during 30 second exposures {skill #5: carry all possible items at all times and know how they all work} . Luckily I also had this portable power battery I got at Wal Mart that is supposed to jump start your car or boat, but also has a cigarette lighter... so I could walk around and light things from different angles and trigger it on and off during the exposures. I think I took over 35 30 second exposures or something before I thought I had my "base" material {skill #6: understanding digital photograhy and the 40D's functions to produce sharp images at night} ... the final process involved layering the images in photoshop and basically taking what I needed out of each image to create a final piece {skill #7: knowing how to post process images creatively in photoshop} , I'm not sure the name for this but it's a few of the photoshop books I've read at Borders in Annapolis... yeah I'm still too cheap to buy them... is that skill number eight? Click the image to enlarge and don't steal it please except for your personal wallpaper... the great thing about this kind of photo is people actually think you were genius enough to walk up at the right time and just shoot a photo that came out like this, and that's the way we professionals like it cause they'll never get anything close to this with that kind of thinking, and neither will we!

Well I got locked in the park after this shoot without my phone. Since there's no coverage out there anyhow it's kind of funny that they have this sign at the gate that says "if you are locked in, call 767-3323" Luckily I had downloaded a free video on my new ipod touch that I had hardwired to my JBL in the 4 Runner, so it was like being at the movies until the cops finally came and let me out... "sir, we were told by dispatch that you refused to leave the park when requested after telling the ranger you were shooting pictures of the moonrise"... Well I just had the video camera mounted on this bracket I wasn't even looking through any lens but at least it's halfway decent. I'll have some great photos from all the courses coming up, as I covered all the outside racing while ken was in shooting all the one designs during this fantastic day of racing in Newport... check my site for links to the outside and inside circles. After shooting some of these guys and seeing how much fun they are having, I think I may have to trade in my windsurfing gear for one of these babies. I'm thinking I can actually carry it with me, whereas windsurfing gear is just so bulky and I can't really leave it around on top of my car when I'm shooting races... anyone got any ideas where I can make a trade? I guess Island Windsurfing in Newport has some swap sales, they apparently don't take used stuff for cash though... This photo is pretty cool, I took part of it at the big boat series in 2006 and the other part on cape cod...

Searchable Galleries beta (self pat on the back)

Well I just posted my first database driven photo gallery while also learning Adobe Lightroom after switching to RAW format on my 40D .... I think I slept about 3.5 hours per night the last week. Since it's in "beta" I wanted to create a mirror, but my other server host kicked me out for over quota... well lets just hope my personal web server doesn't crash.... it's pretty cool though, I've always kind of hated the "add to cart" photo systems I think they just make everything really confusing. Anyhow tell me what you think... it's basicaly a "mini-site" right now, but it seems to be working! I can't believe it...mysql, php, flash, apache, to name just a few of the terms I've been throwing around! Well here it is give it a spin and cross your fingers...

And don't forget to track me this weekend, hmm.... where might I be going?

Hallucinations

This is what happens when you work too late sorting photos, they get harder and harder to ID as your eyes start getting blurry, finally you are basically hallucinating and the photos look like this and are really hard to identify! "hey I think that sail number starts with 4 and ends with a 36" Hmmmm.... now if I just look over the scratch sheet for 2 hours I should find it!

Detour on the Commute Home

It's nice to live in such a beautiful spot here in Freeport Maine. I saw this rainbow on the way home yesterday, and like any good pro photographer, I didn't have my camera with me, so I ran into the house grabbed my camera and drove down to the docks which are luckily only about a mile from my house. I played around with this a bit in photoshop then uploaded it to Panoramio and Geotagged it... check out my geotagged photos on Panoramia if you haven't seen geotagging yet, and pick a picture you'd like for you wall! I was pretty happy to see almost all my photos were selected to be viewed in google earth by google, cool!

Newport to Bermuda Race Update #1

Well it's 3am and I'm back home from a great day of aerial shooting off Newport for the BIG RACE. We also had the boat out there with two photographers shooting from the water, so we'll most certainly have the best selection of pics of any outfit, and you'll actually be able to see them online, get cropping and corrected proofs via email, choose exactly what paper you want, and order exactly what you want rather than getting a tube of really expensive aerial photos mailed to you that you don't want, then returning them only to have a collection agency after you. We had 21 knots up at 600ft. so it was probably a bit less down there, but it looked fantastic. We worked our way up and down the fleet and got some great "down the bow" shots that should be picture perfect for your wall. All the images we shot were shot in RAW format using Canon 40D's and L series lenses which means a few things, but let me just make simple and say it doesn't get any better than that... quality prints, reputable custom service, no wind vortex on your sails, and people who know sailing inside and out... the dedicated team at wavelength... and here they all are, just type your boat name in the search box...
